Yakitori
What is it and what is it made of?
Yakitori are Japanese skewers made by securing meat (typically chicken) and vegetables onto a skewer and grilling the skewer over a direct fire. The meat is seasoned with salt, tare or citrus (e.g., lemon juice) and wasabi or red pepper may be added for some additional flavor.
How is it eaten?
Yakitori is ordered skewer by skewer or omakase and is often enjoyed with beer.
Is it gluten free?
Yakitori seasoned with tare will contain gluten because tare is made with soy sauce. Yakitori seasoned with salt and lemon, save for any cross-contamination on the grill, is gluten free.
It is also important to check for cross contamination on the grill as yakitori with tare may be cooked on the same grill as yakitori seasoned with salt and lemon.
Are there alternatives?
Order yakitori seasoned with salt and lemon.
